WEST CHESTER, Ohio — Middlebury College defeated Amherst by the slimmest of margins to win the NCAA Women's Division III Cross Country Championships Saturday at Voice of America Park. The event was hosted by Wilmington College.
Middlebury — which won NCAA titles in 2000, 2001 and 2003 — totaled 144 points to Amherst's 145. Third-place Calvin was close behind with 149 points. Rounding out the top 10 were Washington University (186), Tufts (214), Dickinson (225), Grinnell (237), 2004 NCAA champion Williams (238), defending champion Geneseo State (266) and Case Western Reserve (295). Sarah Zerzan of Willamette won the invididual title, finishing 20 seconds ahead of Dickinson's Caitlin Bradley. Also in the top 10 were Sarah Spencer of Grinnell, Toni Wiszowaty of Plattsburgh State, Beth Herndon of Washington, Christina Overbeck of Calvin, Heather Wilson of Amhert, defending champion Hailey Harren of Gustavus Adolphus, Ellen Davis of Wesleyan and Alexandra Krieg of Middlebury. Thirty-two teams and 56 individuals participated in the event, marking the largest field ever assembled for an NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
