ADA — Wilmington College opened with a win and closed with a win, but Ohio Northern won seven of the eight matches in between to top the Quakers, 38-12, in Ohio Athletic Conference wrestling action Tuesday night.
The loss drops the Quakers to 1-2-0 in OAC action, 1-4-0 overall. The Polar Bears improve to 2-0-0 in the conference, 5-7-0 for the season.
“Ohio Northern has a nice team. They wrestle very well once you get down on the mat,” Wilmington head coach Mark Lane said. “They kind of took control of the dual once we got on the mat.”
The beat goes on for sophomore Donny Herrington (Cincinnati/Sycamore), who got the dual under way with a first-period pin of Louis Piszker. The fall in 2:40 moves Herrington to 3-0 in OAC duals and 12-6 overall.
“Donny bounced back. He shook off whatever he had going on last week. He came out strong and really dominated his match,” Lane said.
Adam Salyers closed the dual with a 1-0 win over Justin Southwick at 285 pounds. Salyers (Mechanicsburg) scored a third-period escape to take the match and move to 3-0 in the conference, 10-2 overall.
“A lot of wrestlers are trying to keep the score down against Adam,” Lane said. “He controlled the whole match. He had a riding time point until he took bottom in the third period and didn’t get out quite fast enough.”
The Quakers other win on the evening was provided by senior Tim Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North), who shook off a slow start to post a 7-4 win over Garret Freeman at 141 pounds. The win was the second straight for Brown, who is now 1-2 in conference competition.
“Tim is turning the corner,” Lane said. “It just took a switch in confidence. He can take anybody down — there is no doubt about that. We just have to get him to wrestle a little stronger on the mat.”
Chris Heiss (Troy/Miami East) continued to wrestle well, but dropped a 6-3 decision to Jeremy Jones at 133 pounds.
“We’ve got to get some guys back on track who slipped up today,” Lane said. “If we can get them wrestling better, we’ll have much better results.”
