For the second straight week, Wilmington College opened and closed with fireworks but went cold in the middle as the Quakers were dropped by John Carroll, 30-12, in Ohio Athletic Conference wrestling action at Fred Raizk Arena Tuesday night.
The loss drops Wilmington to 1-3 in the OAC, 1-5 overall. John Carroll improves to 1-2 in the conference, 4-5 for the season.
“This dual went the way a lot of our matches have been going. We start off strong, falter in the middle and end strong,” Wilmington head coach Mark Lane said.
Donny Herrington (Cincinnati/Sycamore) opened the dual with a forfeit win at 125 pounds. The sophomore is now a perfect 4-0 in league action and 13-6 overall.
Chris Heiss (Troy/Miami East) turned in a solid performance to defeat Greg Stolfer, 5-1, at 133.
“Chris didn’t bring the physicality that I like to see out of him, but he still wrestled hard,” Lane said.
The Blue Streaks ran the table from 141 to 197 pounds to turn a 9-0 deficit into a 30-9 lead.
“Our guys in the middle of our lineup have got to start stepping up and help us out,” Lane said.
Adam Salyers (Mechanicsburg) closed the match with a dominating 4-0 win over Alec Barker at 285 pounds. Salyers is now 4-0 in conference action and 11-2 for the season.
“Adam stayed aggressive,” Lane said. “A lot of guys have been just staying away from everything he does, and that’s what Barker did. Adam kept control of the match. There was never a doubt what was going to happen.”
