Kortney Kin scored 23 points as Wilmington nipped Grove City, 66-61, in overtime.
SPRINGFIELD — Wilmington College overcame a nine-point deficit to post a 66-61 overtime win over Grove City in the consolation game of Wittenberg’s Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic Wednesday afternoon. Wilmington improves to 5-6 while Grove City drops to 4-6.
“We didn’t play particularly well, but we stayed with it and were able to pull one out at the end,” Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve said.
The Lady Quakers sputtered out of the gate, hitting on 28 percent of their first-half shots. At the break, Grove City led, 32-27.
The Grove City lead reached nine when Leah Gibson scored at 11:13. Wilmington got a 3-point jumper from Claire Brown (Batavia/Glen Este) to launch an 11-0 run that was capped by a pair of Kortney Kin (Upper Sandusky/Riverdale) free throws. With 7:43 to play, Wilmington led, 50-48.
Two points was the largest spread for the balance of regulation. Kin connected on a free throw at 1:20 that sent the game to overtime tied at 59.
Kin scored five points in OT while Grove City managed a lone basket by Gibson.
“We didn’t rebound well, but we contested shots well in overtime. We played well enough to win the game,” Scheve said.
Kin scored game-high 23 points and pulled down six rebounds. Brown was the other Lady Quaker in double figures, finishing with 10 points to go with team-high eight boards.
Allie Meranda (Georgetown) added nine points and three steals, and Amy Bricker (Waynesville) handed out tournament-record 11 assists while committing just one turnover. The sophomore’s 18 assists for the two games also established a new tournament record and earned her a position on the all-tournament team.
“Amy did a nice job. She had nine turnovers against Case Western, but a lot of those turnovers weren’t really her fault. Somebody has to go and catch the ball if she throws it to them,” Scheve said. “Her assists toward the end of the game were key. She was able to find open people in the right spots for some easy baskets. Allie brought a lot of energy the entire game. Her defensive effort was a big factor in our win.”
Wilmington will host Transylvania 3 p.m. Saturday at Fred Raizk Arena.
