Cory Sheets is safe at the plate as Caitlin Baker looks on.
A pair of solid efforts went unrewarded as Wilmington College dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to Baldwin-Wallace at the WC Softball Complex Saturday afternoon.
The 7-2, 6-5 losses leave Wilmington at 0-16 in the OAC, 7-23 overall. Baldwin-Wallace improves to 10-8 in the conference, 24-16 for the season.
The games were preceded by a ceremony honoring Wilmington seniors Liz Christensen (Lakewood/St. Joseph’s Academy), Dana LaCoste (Peebles), Amanda Smith (Delaware/Hayes) and Jena Suffel (Bryan/Fairview).
The opener was a duel between Smith and BW’s Sarah Baker.
Wilmington got to Baker for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cory Sheets (Wanamaker, Ind./Franklin Central) singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Kylie Ford (South Vienna/Northeastern) reached on an error and came home on a Caitlin Baker (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) base hit.
The Yellow Jackets sent the game to extra innings with a run in the seventh and plated five unearned runs — all coming after the first two batters had been retired — in the eighth to take the win.
Cory Sheets had two of Wilmington’s six hits.
Game two had a similar tone.
Trailing 5-2, the Quakers tied the game on a three-run double by Sara Young (Springfield/South) in the bottom of the sixth.
An error set the table for another unearned BW run in the top of the seventh. Down 6-5, Wilmington put runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally and game ended on a groundout.
Suffel had a pair of hits to lead Wilmington’s seven-hit attack.
The Quakers will close out OAC play with a doubleheader at Ohio Northern on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
