Jessica VanWinkle posted wins on the singles and doubles courts Wednesday to help WC defeat Mount St. Joseph.
Wilmington College rolled to a 9-0 win over Mount St. Joseph in non-conference women’s tennis action on the Lady Quakers’ courts Wednesday afternoon.
Wilmington is now 1-2 while the Mount drops to 4-4.
“We saw a lot of things in Saturday’s tri-match at Wittenberg that we wanted our team to work on. We worked on a lot of those things the last two days in practice, and I saw positive results of that in their play today,” Wilmington head coach Jessie Loeffelholz said. “I am really happy that they are so receptive of coaching. They listened and learned and improved. That is what we will continue to do.”
Wilmington took control of the match early by sweeping doubles play. Marie Granstrom (Burtrask, Vasterbotten, Sweden/Adalsskolan) and Jessica VanWinkle (Vickery/Floyd Central, Ind.) won the final three games to post a 9-7 win over Judy Frey and Laura Robison at the No. 1 position.
“Marie and Jes worked hard and communicated well,” Loeffelholz said. “I could also tell that they relaxed and started enjoying themselves. They really played a nice match.”
Macey Abrams (Reynoldsurg) and Stephanie Amrhein (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County) raised their record at No. 2 doubles to 3-0 with an 8-3 win over Candice Bleh and Brittany Teagle. At the No. 3 position, Jessica Veite (Loveland) and Lisa Brady (Pickerington/Pickerington North) were 8-4 winners over Lauren McDonald and Kristi Ratterman.
On the singles courts, Amrhein and Veite moved their records to 3-0 with wins at No. 4 and 5, respectively. Amrhein blitzed McDlonald, 6-2, 6-1, while Veite topped Bleh, 6-0, 6-0. Granstrom posted an impressive straight-set win at No. 1. Abrams dropped her opening set at the No. 2 position, but rallied to take a super tiebreaker victory. Michelle Reiber (Jamestown/Greeneview) bageled Alisha Cooper at No. 6 singles.
